"Welcome to 'The Future of Education,' a 5-part series in celebration of Educator Appreciation Month from Harvard Alumni for Education. The HAEd Cambridge Chapter, launched this series hosted by co-Chair, Dr. Crystal Rose, in collaboration with other partners and stakeholders from the Harvard community to present five groundbreaking digital roundtable events from April 2022 - May 2022.

Each event sets out to capture a snapshot of a specific junction of education in the context of exploring obstacles and best practices through the lens of world-renowned thought leaders in this space. In our commitment to recording and sharing our presentations and discussions, we believe these segments can facilitate productive reflection and connection during this momentous historical moment. Whether this sparks new ideas or encourages conversation, we hope you can take inspiration from our incredible leaders in academia. Episode 1: The Future of Early Education

 

About your Expert Speakers:

Dr. Nell O'Donnell Weber, Ed.D.(she/her): Back again for a special 'Encore Case Study' to explore a current project, more down below. She is an independent international education consultant with writing, research, policy, and program expertise. Her particular interests include parenting, parental beliefs, early childhood education, literacy, language acquisition, global citizenship, and international education. She is currently working on projects to develop and promote pre-primary indicator use with USAID, a responsible parenting program for the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe in Wisconsin, a program to teach parenting to high school students across Illinois, and improving the measurement of outcomes of a parent empowerment program in Mozambique and Kenya.

Marlon Davis, Ed.M.(he/his): Marlon has amassed over 25 years of urban public and charter school education experience. His work experience has also provided him with the opportunity to serve in a number of states throughout the country, which has deepened his knowledge and understanding of the challenges that educators face regardless of zip code. Marlon’s professional career in education began in 1994 as a member of Teach for America with the New Jersey Teacher Corps. As an elementary school teacher, his experiences reaffirmed his passion for ensuring high rates of student success and family engagement. It is this drive that led him to pursue a masters degree in education and assume a leadership position in school administration. In 1998, Marlon received his Ed. M. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy via the Principal’s Certification Pattern from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. During his tenure in administration, Marlon has served as an Assistant Principal and Principal in traditional K-12 settings and as the Executive Director of a charter school. As Executive Director, Marlon was successful in turning around The Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School, located in the city of Cambridge, into one of the highest performing charter schools in the city.

Marlon went on to assist in the creation of a start-up education software company, Design by Educators, Inc., now called Validated Learning, Inc. (www.validatedlearning.co) The mission of the company is to create smart technology products for educators that save time and provide instant data that can be used to impact instruction. The first product, QuickKey, is an app for iOS and Android devices that uses the camera to turn the smartphone into an optical scanner, so that multiple choice assessments and other information can be scanned, assessed, and analyzed quickly. The app is now available on iTunes and via Google for Android devices. Marlon has served as the Chief Operating Officer and Director of School and District Engagements for Validated Learning Co. He has been very interested in Executive Function skills as a way to boost student achievement in students from low-income environments and gateway cities. Currently, Marlon is an Executive Function Specialist/Family Engagement Manager at the Acera School of Innovation, Creativity, and Leadership.

Dr. Kinga Petrovai, Ed.D. (she/her): she is a learning specialist with a doctorate in learning technologies from Oxford University. She founded The Art & Science of Learning Inc. a consultancy that brings research informed solutions to improve workplace learning. Kinga brings a global perspective and multidisciplinary approach to learning, working at the intersection of research and practice. She has worked with universities, the Government of Canada, and corporations to create learning and evaluation solutions. Skye R. Regan, MBA (she/her): is a Toronto-based writer, performer, and producer. Most recently, she has shared her insights by teaching children from ages 3-17 in scene study, character, and performance. As an alumna of Harvard and recent MBA graduate, with training in writing and improv from Second City, Skye writes and creates unique IP that foregrounds underrepresented voices in engaging character-driven animated comedies to delight young audiences, making the world a more joyful place for all!

About your Moderators:

Dr. Crystal Rose, M.D., Ph.D.(she/her): is a recognized educator, scientist, academic lecturer and educational program designer. She has international expertise in broad sectors, from medicine, research, and academia to the media productions industry which recently awarded her an Emmy. Her research-based approach to systems analysis, data integration, program implementation, and academic advising is both innovative and holistic. Her cutting-edge initiatives have launched some of today’s top young leaders featured in Forbes 30 under 30 and ‘Time’s Best of 2021’ including current poet laureate, Amanda Gorman. Since completing her M.D., Ph.D. at the University of Heidelberg and Harvard, she serves on various NPOs and educational boards and is a founding member of the U.N. appointed Future of Capital Group.

Hannah Shin, Ed.M.(she/her): graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. in Psychology and Elementary Education, from Harvard University Graduate School of Education with an M.Ed. in Human Development and Psychology (Concentration in Culture and Human Development), and from Simmons University with an Ed.S. in Applied Behavior Analysis. Her experiences in education range from teaching in a general education classroom to working with a private organization primarily serving individuals diagnosed with Autism and their families. Hannah currently works as a Behavior Specialist for Cambridge Public Schools in Massachusetts and is committed deeply to identifying and dismantling racism in all areas at all levels, particularly in regards to its impacts on the schooling experiences of children of color. She hopes HAEd will create avenues through which such work can be accomplished in multiple arenas in partnership with like-minded individuals.

Episode 3: The Future of Middle + High School Education

 

Sector Experts:

Tom McKenney, Ed.M. (he/his): he began his career in education as a middle school English language arts and high school economics teacher at a school in India. In 2013, he joined Harvard University working in advancement and major gifts during The Harvard Campaign, a historic $6.5 billion fundraising campaign. In 2017, Tom became the Executive Director at the Holy Cross Family Ministries Foundation in North Easton, MA, where he served as the chief fundraiser, led the Foundation’s team and strategic planning, and oversaw the endowment. He successfully rebuilt the Foundation’s advancement program and exceeded fundraising records during his four years in this role. Today, Tom is the President of the Nativity School of Worcester, a tuition-free, Jesuit middle school for the boys from under-resourced communities. Tom serves as the head of school and oversees all operations including the academic, graduate support, and advancement programs. A graduate of Stonehill College, Tom also holds a Master of Education from Harvard University and is a Certified Fund-Raising Executive. He co-founded the Rural Education Resource Development Initiative, which provides children from economically disadvantaged communities scholars

Patricia Lozada (she/her) MPA, LLM: Attorney and Master in Public Policy Harvard Kennedy School. Partner at Knovva Academy, Ed Tech located in Boston MA serving high school students coming from more than twenty countries through its online platform and in presence programs.

Prof. Chip McNeal, B.A., B.S., Ed. M., Phd.D. (C)(he/him): is an award-winning, international educator, researcher, civic leader & activist – engaging in transdisciplinary practice across art-forms and genres, with a focus on arts, educational equity, social justice, community engagement, and cultural competency. He guides government agencies, non-profits, and schools on change-management, creative collaboration, program creation, equitable arts policies, diversity, and organizational cultural competency.

Mc Neal has over 30 years of senior leadership experience and flexibly negotiates the intersection between creativity, new technologies, and professional learning. He has trained in multiple culturally responsive practices including; restorative justice techniques, social-emotional learning, and Teaching Tolerance curriculum (from the Southern Poverty Law Center). He is an accredited Integrated Learning Specialist and a certified Oral Historian. A frequent and sought-after conference presenter, Mc Neal has lectured on arts, education, social justice, multiculturalism, and equity for The Edinburgh International Festival, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Mr. McNeal is the first-ever Director of Diversity, Equity and Community for the San Francisco Opera. A pioneering leader in the field of arts, McNeal is ostensibly the first director of diversity for an opera company in the United States. Mr. McNeal has operationalized a new department in a major arts organization for the second time. In his role, he leads internal and external initiatives aimed at developing diverse audiences, creating a safe, and diverse working environment and facilitating the further advancements of the organizational mission. He is tasked with creating a culture of belonging and acceptance, we’re diverse peoples on value and inspiration in the arc of Opera. He is guided by the goals and objectives outlined in the 2019 Strategic Plan – to place develop diversity, and equity inclusion at the core of arts and business practice. Mr. McNeal works organization-wide to advise, consult, and mentor on diversity and equity initiatives. He also continues training teaching artists, conducts arts research, develops novel initiatives, and advises on artistic content, culturally responsive pedagogy, creative collaboration and more. He designs and curates accredited professional development training for credentialed educators who partner with the San Francisco Opera.

A celebrated dance educator, Mr. Mc Neal is the former Director of Education for San Francisco Ballet where he established the distinguished, San Francisco Ballet Center for Dance Education, engaging over 30,000 people annually through 1,500 culturally diverse events. Mc Neal served as a Transformative Learning Coach, Leadership Advisor and Arts Integration Specialist for Alameda County Office of Education where he developed culturally responsive, inquiry-based, social justice curriculum. He is a founding member of the San Francisco Unified School District’s Arts Education Master Plan Advisory Committee. McNeal is on the Leadership Council of Create California, a statewide-advocacy consortium, where he co-chairs the Equity Committee – working to creating a sustainable, equitable, arts learning eco-system for the state of California. Prof. Mc Neal holds two bachelor’s degrees – in psychology, and sociology from Excelsior College, and a master’s degree in education from Lesley University. Mr. Mc Neal is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Transformative Theory, and Culturally and Linguistically Responsive studies and educational equity at California Institute for Integral Studies in San Francisco. Mc Neal’s research focuses on the intersection of arts, cultural responsiveness, and educational equity, as he devises solutions to the pressing issues of education reform and racial equity in the arts.

Susan Goodkin, A.B., B.A., M.A., J.D. (she/her): She is the Executive Director of California Learning Strategies Center. She is a Rhodes Scholar and is a graduate of Harvard University, Harvard Law School, and Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. A former appellate attorney, Susan lectures and writes nationally on education issues. Her articles have appeared in the Washington Post, Miami Herald, Philadelphia Enquirer, Sacramento Bee and Houston Chronicle, as well as many other publications. She is also an Associate of the Negotiation Strategy Institute, and has lectured widely on negotiation and gender, as well as legal ethics.

Cole Scanlon (he/his)A.B.: he is a military officer and social entrepreneur whose areas of expertise include economic development and K-12 education. He co-founded/co-directs Fair Opportunity Project (an education technology nonprofit), co-directs the Lab for Entrepreneurship and Development (a research lab started at Harvard’s IQSS), and was awarded Forbes 30 Under 30. Cole grew up in Miami, Florida with his four siblings prior to attending Harvard College (A.B. in Applied Mathematics/Economics) and Oxford University (M.Sc. in Social Policy). Before commissioning as a Ground Intelligence Officer in the United States Marine Corps, Cole worked at Google’s Growth Lab. He also has work experiences at Goldman Sachs and The World Bank and has co-edited two books.

Dr. Lynne Monney Teta, Ed.D. (she/her): Experienced consultant with a demonstrated history of working in the field of education, K-12 through higher ed. Skilled in Leadership Development, College Advising, Fundraising, Strategic Planning, Program Design & Implementation. Dedicated professional with a Doctor of Education focused on supporting urban school leaders.

Episode 4: The Future of Specialized Education: Special Needs, Gifted Ed and Targeted Education

Michelle Barmazel (she/her): she is the co-president of the Massachusetts Association for Gifted Education. She has spent the past 10 years working in the field of Gifted Education after transitioning from the world of business. She consults worldwide and sits on several boards. She currently works with families with gifted children to help them find a more appropriate educational paths. Michelle has an MC-MPA from the Kennedy School where she focused on gifted education policy. She also has an MBA from Stanford and was formerly a consultant with McKinsey & Co.

Emily Villamar-Robbins, A.B., J.D. (she/her): is a parent of two students in Texas public schools and a volunteer for local and state organizations supporting public education. She is a graduate of Harvard Law School, completed a graduate certificate in gifted education, and has served as a member of the Texas Commissioner of Education’s Advisory Council for Gifted Education since 2018. She serves on the founding board of the Gifted Education Family Network.

Amelia E. Thompson, B.A., Ed.M. (she/her): For more than twelve years, Amelia has provided strategy, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation, program design, project management, and leadership development support to social entrepreneurs, faith-based leaders, businesses and nonprofit organizations. She completed studies at Vassar College and graduate studies at St. John’s University and Harvard University. She co-founded a social impact organization, RenewToday, which works with individuals and organizations to develop their leadership capacity in the areas of mercy, justice and community.

Episode 5: The Future of Higher Education

 

Sector Experts:

Ariana Aparicio Aguilar, Ed.M. (she/her): Ariana is originally from Mexico City, Mexico and immigrated to Northern California at the age of four. She began her educational journey at Santa Rosa Junior College and transferred to Sonoma State University where she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and graduated with Distinction. She holds a Master's in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and Policy at the University of California, Riverside. In 2019, she was awarded the Latinx Amplifier award for her work advocating for the immigrant community in Boston, MA.

Ariana’s professional career is influenced by her own experiences navigating life and higher education in the U.S. as an undocumented, DACA recipient, and first-generation Latina. In addition to being a doctoral student, Ariana enjoys giving back to her community by mentoring college students. She is passionate about issues pertaining to undocumented students, immigration, social justice advocacy, and access & retention of minoritized students in higher education. During her free time Ariana enjoys hiking, resting, and traveling.

Melissa Ferrick, Ed.M (they/she): Melissa Ferrick is a Professor of the Practice at Northeastern University in the Music Industry Department at the College of Arts Media and Design. They've released seventeen albums over the last twenty-five years and has won numerous awards for songwriting, production, and performance. Melissa is currently an artist on KRS Records, the named plaintiff of the class action lawsuit, Ferrick v. Spotify for willful infringement of copyright. and their publishing catalog is administered worldwide by the Raleigh Music Group. From 2013 - 2019, Melissa was an Associate Professor of Songwriting at Berklee College of Music. They hold an Ed.M from Harvard University.

Regarded in the industry and by their peers as one of the most prolific and hardworking artists in the business. Jenny Korn (she/her)Ed.M.: Jenny Korn is a feminist activist of color for social justice, a ciswoman scholar of race and gender in mass media, digital life, and artificial intelligence, and a member of Mensa, the high intelligence quotient (IQ) society. Korn is a Research Affiliate and the Founding Coordinator of the Race+Tech+Media Working Group at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. Concurrently, she is the Founding Director of Diversity Discussions, part of Princeton University’s current work on racial equity that has been ongoing for nearly a decade and involves over 40 organizations. The author of numerous publications, Korn has won awards from the Association of Black Princeton Alumni; the African American Communication and Culture Division and the Philosophy of Communication Division of the National Communication Association; the Minorities and Communication Division and the Communication Theory and Methodology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication; the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research; the Association for Information Science and Technology; and the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender. She has given over one hundred talks as invited keynote presentations, university guest lectures, interactive community education, and refereed conference presentations. As a public scholar, Korn has been quoted in interviews with NPR, CNN, SXSW, Bustle, Colorlines, Forbes, Mashable, Reader’s Digest, U.S. News & World Report, Washington Post, and more. Drawing on critical race and intersectional feminist theories, Korn explores how Internet spaces and artificial intelligences influence, and are influenced, by assemblages of race and gender and how online producers-consumers have constructed inventive digital representations and computer-mediated communications of identity.

Prof. Chip McNeal, B.A., B.S., Ed. M., Phd.D. (C)(he/him): Charles Chip Mc Neal is an award-winning educator, researcher, civic leader & activist – engaging in transdisciplinary practice across art forms, with a focus on arts, educational equity, social justice, and community engagement. He has over 25 years of senior leadership experience and flexibly negotiates the intersection between creativity, new technologies, and professional learning. A pioneering leader in the field of arts and DEI, he is the first-ever Director of Diversity, Equity and Community for the San Francisco Opera. Mc Neal consults as a Transformative Learning Coach, Equity Advisor, and Arts Integration Specialist. He holds two bachelor’s degrees – in psychology, and sociology from Excelsior College, and a master’s degree in education from Lesley University. His doctorate in Transformative Theory from California Institute for Integral Studies, explores cultural pedagogies and healing practices in education.

Dr. Jessica Pesce, A.B., Ed. M., Phd.D.(she/her):Experienced Faculty Affairs professional with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry at multiple elite universities. Earned a Ph.D. in higher education with a dissertation on faculty development. Visiting and Adjunct Lecturer on higher education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with a background of high school teaching.

Prof. Leon Prieto, A.B., Phd.D.(he/him): Dr. Leon Prieto is an Associate Professor of Management & the Director of the Center for Social Innovation & Sustainable Entrepreneurship in the College of Business at Clayton State University. He also serves as an Associate Research Fellow at Cambridge Centre for Social Innovation - University of Cambridge, Judge Business School. He has published articles in respected academic and practitioner journals such as Academy of Management Learning & Education, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management History, Harvard Business Review, and MIT Sloan Review. His first book (coauthored with Dr. Simone Phipps) is entitled African American Management History: Insights on Gaining a Cooperative Advantage. His scholarship has received recognition from Thinkers50, the Academy of Management, and the United States Association for Small Business & Entrepreneurship. He holds a Ph.D. in Human Resource and Leadership Development from Louisiana State University, an ALM in Extension Studies, History from Harvard University, an Executive Certificate in Leading Sustainable Corporations from Oxford University, an MBA from Georgia Southern University, and a B.S in Management from Claflin University.

Dr. Donna Winston, A.B., M.A., M.S., Ph.D., (she/her): Inquisitive social scientist with 15 years of global experience in mixed methods research, evaluation, and policy analysis. Skilled in collaborating with stakeholders to carry out all phases of the research process in alignment with client vision and needs. A strong writer with expertise in data instrument creation (survey, interview protocol), data collection, and both qualitative and statistical analyses. Quick learner that can apply skills in different contexts with experience in health, education, and the labour force. Keen to join organisations that improve the world in big ways.

About your Moderators:

Hannah Shin, Ed.M.(she/her): graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. in Psychology and Elementary Education, from Harvard University Graduate School of Education with an M.Ed. in Human Development and Psychology (Concentration in Culture and Human Development), and from Simmons University with an Ed.S. in Applied Behavior Analysis. Her experiences in education range from teaching in a general education classroom to working with a private organization primarily serving individuals diagnosed with Autism and their families. Hannah currently works as a Behavior Specialist for Cambridge Public Schools in Massachusetts and is committed deeply to identifying and dismantling racism in all areas at all levels, particularly in regards to its impacts on the schooling experiences of children of color. She hopes HAEd will create avenues through which such work can be accomplished in multiple arenas in partnership with like-minded individuals.

Dr. Crystal Rose, M.D., Ph.D.(she/her): is a recognized educator, scientist, academic lecturer and educational program designer. She has international expertise in broad sectors, from medicine, research, and academia to the media productions industry which recently awarded her an Emmy. Her research-based approach to systems analysis, data integration, program implementation, and academic advising is both innovative and holistic. Her cutting-edge initiatives have launched some of today’s top young leaders featured in Forbes 30 under 30 and ‘Time’s Best of 2021’ including current poet laureate, Amanda Gorman. Since completing her M.D., Ph.D. at the University of Heidelberg and Harvard, she serves on various NPOs and educational boards and is a founding member of the U.N. appointed Future of Capital Group.
